Freaks and Fried Butter in Florida, USA

I am going to say something today that you might dismiss as ridiculous hyperbole, but I promise you that I say it with utmost sincerity: There are few events in life as entertaining for a European as the Florida State Fair. Six years ago, on a whim, Scrubs and I parked our rental car in front…… Continue reading Freaks and Fried Butter in Florida, USA

Careening Around Cairo, Egypt

I was lucky enough to visit Egypt just before things got politically messy. Scrubs and I arrived in Cairo in 2010 on the last day of Eid. The festive mood was infectious, and even after a long journey it was impossible not to feel cheered by the sight of shiny banners and twinkling, colourful lights…… Continue reading Careening Around Cairo, Egypt

Well. As I stood thigh-high in snow, looking around me for any sign of civilisation, I patted my pockets for my phone and marveled at my own stupidity. Since then, I’ve been busy trying to visit as many new places…… Continue reading Sporadically Nomadic

For example, Mark Twain once said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness,” and I’ve certainly found that to be true in my own life. There is something about being in a country that is utterly unlike your own; it stalls the senses and resets…… Continue reading Straight Outta Ireland

Hi There!

I’m Quinn! Nice to meet you!

Just give me a moment while I move in for a hug, then feel a sudden surge of pure, undiluted awkwardness and pull back just as you lean in, then stick out my hand stiffly before muttering, ‘Oh screw it’ and giving you a bear hug. A bear hug from a tiny bear. A koala hug, if you will.

I’m in my thirties and as confused as ever.
